Yoga Teacher, Dance Director, Motivational Speaker & Advocate for Arts in Education:
Denise began studying and practicing yoga in 1998. She came to yoga seeking refuge from injuries sustained in her dance career. She soon found herself immersed in the yoga culture and started to explore the various styles and philosophies offered.
Over time Denise came to realize the style of yoga best suited to her needs is a blend of vinyasa flow and alignment. “Movement in stillness and stillness in movement,” or the balance between effort & surrender with attention to equanimity of the body has become her recent trademark. Yoga & Dance are great for your health and healing.
Residing in New York City, she did her yoga training at one of New York’s premiere yoga studio networks—YogaWorks. She received her 500-hour RYT Certification in 2006 and has been, along with teaching dance for over 20 years, actively teaching yoga in New York and around the world ever since.
Denise’s classes became a staple at several YogaWork’s Manhattan locations. Her teaching style is very real and down to earth; and like a true teacher, she is able to help peel away the layers and help students explore the inner workings of their own bodies.
Her blend of breath, alignment & movement, along with emphasis on the balance of effort & surrender, allows students to feel secure in their own personal journeys. The class is kept focused and engaged as she weaves humor and philosophy throughout the lesson and relates the practice to everyday life.
Denise’s passion for yoga has inspired her to travel to places like India, Thailand, Cambodia, Australia and Costa Rica to seek out some of the world’s most gifted teachers including: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, BKS Iyengar, Dr Christine Northrup, Robert Thurman, John Friend and David Life. Also leading international retreats and workshops, Denise deepens her practice and explores many limbs of yoga including breath, postures, meditation and working with the charkas.
Prior to yoga, Denise was a professional dancer appearing in theatres and commercial outlets. She created and taught the dance ensemble for kids at Sidwell School where President Obama’s children attended. As with her yoga practice, Denise soaked up ever dance & choreography opportunity she could. Her modern jazz moment style was described as “unique, independent and spicy” when she opened for Sarah Vaughn at the Capitol City Jazz Festival. She also appeared in commercials like “Charley” for Revlon while dancing with the Excursions Dance Company.
Choreographer and instructor for the Washington Redskins football team, Denise received the Salute to the Arts Choreography Award. She’s worked as a guest artist across the USA in NYC, Nashville, Denver and LA. She also did her graduate work for her master’s degree in dance, anatomy and education on full scholarship at The George Washington University, where she ran Dance Production Groups, and later taught classes; that is’ after earning her Bachelor of Philosophy (a self designed degree) in dance from Penn State, as the President of Orchesis, the PSU performing arts dance company.
Invited to join the celebrity, arts & entertainment non-profit organization, The Creative Coalition in the early nineties, Denise became an advocate for the arts & health helping to raise awareness and funds to lobby on Capitol Hill for the NEA and arts in education. She founded her own dance outreach non-profit organization, New Moves, Inc. in 1994 and received a multitude of accolades and awards in the dance community including grants from Con Edison and the New York City Council Youth Program, Manhattan Borough President's Office.
Memberships for Denise include: National Yoga Alliance, Yoga Journal Community, New York Yoga Alliance, Dance/USA, National Dance Education Association, Americans for the Arts and New York State Alliance of Non-profit Arts Organizations. Serving on the board of Creative Women NY, speaking engagements included the Girls Scouts of America, Women Care Inc., the National Dance Association, and Travel Radio.
Denise brings to yoga her extensive knowledge of the anatomical and energetic human body, kinesiology, specialized movement techniques and numerous dance movement styles. She introduces new yoga workshops for preventative healthcare, & lower back pain. Keeping a regular teaching schedule and traveling, she is available for private lessons. Corporate conferences are now introducing Denise as their resident motivational speaker & yogini. Mount Sinai hospital recently invited Denise to conduct workshop on site.
In 2019, Denise splits her time between State College, PA, New York City, and Washington DC. She picked up additional residence in PA in 2013 to be close to her elderly parents. Denise hopes to inspire others to live in his or her own uniques style, and her motto is "remain curious".
